That's not very nice at all.
SWEET MOTHER OF MERCY
That's not Mercy's mother.
Or is it? The plot thickens…
Actually, where the hell *is* Mercy??
Last seen on the porch of the club mansion.
And I'd hardly call it sweet.
Oh good. Nightmare fuel.
EXACTLY what i needed before going to bed. Fantastic.
Let's fuel up the Scream Machine and go on an ADVIIINCHR!
Whelp, I pissed myself, better change these pants and- aw, dang, there I go again…
NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE
I have never NOPE'd so hard in all my life. D8
Oh sweet holy fuck. This comic is terrifying and amazing all at once.
That is beautiful. Panel 3 is Zane's POV right? Love the glow coming from underneath his blindfold.
Oh wow. Totally missed that on first read.
Yep — and notice she's coming from under the bed in the previous panel.
Pretty sure that ain't Maddy.
Oops. Right. I actually knew that, but…
Maddy? Your breath smells horrible.
This is just delicious. I was going to say something about how much Ioved the type decisions in panel two of last comic, really gave me a great chill as Wadsworth thrashes out, almost aggresively, I could really hear his voice change but then here…man. Taking the middle of the top row, it's just brilliant to show us how young Wad can already see the blue glow starting underneath his blindfold, and is it just me or is nice slightly larger than the other word? Really fantastic style, as always. I'm loving how you pace and draw everything so well that there is real emotional attatchment. I really want to take these books, when they start coming out, and analyze the framing, pacing and writing in the same way you would with a film.
Short summary: Kris please don't stop don't you ever stop
"How nice, with glowing eyes you don't even need a flashlight to see in the dark"
Under the bed, Zane. That's a rookie mistake. Always secure the area under the bed!
YOU FORGOT THE OTHER GHOSTS, ZANE
It doesn't matter if you cabinets are open or closed.
If you're wearing a blindfold, the entire world becomes a ghost-creation-zone.
FREAKING HELL THAT IS TERRIFYING
Zane probably should have turned his shoes upside down…
Oh Hell, it's Harker.
Don't worry guys! It's just Dahk Torr, sent back in time somehow and trying to blend in. http://starslip.chainsawsuit.com/2009/02/13/stars…
*Tohrr, excuse me.
Haha. I bought all the books when it finished to read it (just so happened the ending is when I discovered Starslip :D ). When I got to that particular strip I couldn't stop laughing out loud.
His head's all bandaged… Kind of like hers…
And her ayes are all stitched up… as if they were stitched closed…
And by ayes I mean eyes.
If I'm remembering right, "How Nice" is an absolutely incredibly nod to a TERRIFYING short story by Stephen King called "The Boogeyman." Nggh, just <3 Broodhollow so much.
Let's all imagine the clotted way those words sound, as of the off-gassing of hidden corpses deep in the squelching mud of Derry…
NO OH GOD NO OH GOD OH GOD NO
It keeps getting better – and scarier!
I WAS RIGHT ABOUT UNDER THE BED OH NOOOOOO GAHHHHH *never sleeps again* D: D: D: D: D:
I guess it's official. The monsters/ghosts/phantasms/life-deprived are R. E. A. L. This is one of the best horror works I've read in my 41 years. Stunning.
(OK, I didn't start reading horror when I was a year old. More like when I was 13.)
Ah, a familiar face once again!
A familiar not-a-face.
Reminds me of the One-Eyed Willy skeleton, especially his eye patch. So awesome.
It doesn't have an eye patch. It's wearing stitched-together, tattered fabric as a skin substitute.
Unless it is stitched-together skin… you know, like the Skintaker might have made?
I actually meant this skeleton's eye reminded me of One-Eyed Willy's eye-patch. But yeah, now I'm wondering who this character is. I wonder how much we'll find out before the first book comes to an end!
I like how we are all scared together. "Tell us another story Unca Kris."
I AM HIGHLY AMBIVALENT ABOUT HEARING MORE STORIES
I always wondered about Stephen King's kids in this regard. "Okay, kids, ready for another bedtime story?" "No, Dad, No! Please, noooooo!"
AAAAAAA! AAAAAAAAA! AAAAAAA! OHGOD LOOK AWAY LOOK AWAY–AAAAAAAA I LOOKED AT IT AGAIN!
Wait. Remind me what Zane's game plan was again?
1. Lock self in room with ghost
1. Lock self in room with ghost.
2. OH GOD IT'S THE WRONG GHOST.
3. Piddle self, run.
Since he nailed the friggin' door shut, there won't be much running.
See, Wadsworth? See what I meant about your endgame?
He forgot to close one thing: His mind!
gg, see you next round, Zane.
Though I'd check to see if any new comics were up before I went to bed.
And now I hate you.
Huh. Where'd all this terror pee come from?
um. Um. UMMM
"How Nice". Is it Opposite Day again already?
So… This must be the one who can only get you when nobody is looking. You know, the one young Maddy has been protecting Zane from with her constant watching.
What, exactly, is supposed to be happening in panels 4 – 12? It's a lot of panels. 10 + 11 has a neat misty-fog-skull going on. Panel 6 just has SOMETHING COMING OUT OF WADSWORTH'S HEAD WHAT IS IT OH MY GOD.
But really, what is it? Harker was hiding under the bed already, so it's not HIM materializing out of Wadsworth's head. Maddy is still in the desk drawer (She probably wouldn't like Harker much! He should put a blindfold on, too, for safety!). So… I have to presume it must be either a monster bat or a french skeleton manifesting from his mind, because I can't think of anything else.
Well, whatever's going on, it was unexpected and fuckin' scary, and I'm really none too sure what's going to happen now.
The glow is increasing panel-by-panel. Also of course the increasingly narrow panels add tension.
Okay. Yes. Both of those things are happening, but I'm saying that traditionally you wouldn't see nine panels devoted to them. It is an interesting choice, and I hope there is more to it than that it is an effective tension ratchet. If there isn't, that's fine, but I like to try to read into things. That seems especially rewarding for an online comic like Broodhollow, but your mileage may vary.
My off-the-cuff remark about this one strip having a curious excess of panels seems to have superceded the more interesting topic of something erupting from Zane's head. No one else sees that? The thing coming out of his head?
… no, I don't see anything erupting/emerging from his head. Which part of his head do you mean?
I see the background cloudiness varying, but nothing I'd call a "Something"
The sixth panel. Top-right of the strip. Two mysterious red blotches that don't look like anything else in the rest of the strip, but seem like eyes (Because… there's two of them? Okay, that's pretty weak evidence for "eyes").
The… "weathering" effect (Random grainy texture overlays, background cloudiness, that sort of thing) is heaviest in that panel, and the "red marks" simply indicate where there ISN'T any grainy texture overlay obscuring the colors underneath, but… it looks intentional? I am probably crazy. It just stands out to me. Shit, I am trying to analyze background noise. I'm totally crazy. Sorry!
If I were Kris, I'd be delighting in the idea that my comic got people worked up enough to analyze textures and noise and read into them. :D
And for this comic, it's a good idea, too. I watch for that myself. Just this time, my brain isn't drawing the same conclusion. But hey, that's part of what makes art fun.
GREAT. THANKS. GOODNIGHT I GUESS.
If you relax your eyes you can get a neat "Magic Eye" stereogram out of the first two panels.
Yeah none of us saw this one coming really
you're all welcome in my corner, it's quite well lit
Hmm hate to say it, but I don't really understand the 12th panel. It is a lovely scene and page though, and eerie and beautiful as you intend :) I'm just not sure what the storytelling is saying in a couple of these extra sliced panels. xD; I trust you as a professional that it means something but I don't think I'm advanced enough to tell. Thank for you for sharing this amazing project.
I think the 12th panel is clearly there so the total number of panels adds up to 13…
Seriously, what is wrong with you!
You are amazing and…and…terrifying.
Zane immediately regrets his decision. Seriously, how is locking yourself in with a ghost going to help?????
Also, my brain is screaming.
We told you this was a bad idea Zane.
If only he read the comments section before this big mess.
Don't you worry, Zane, I think I got it – this is one of those timey-wimey things that can't move as long as someone is looking at it! It never budged as long as I watched him! Now quick, get off that blindfold and run – I'll hold him off…!!!
Wait, she came from under the bed? Does that count? Oh man Zane, I can't believe you didn't think of that!
In his defense, I don't think that "under the bed" is any kind of an opening that you can close. Not… just with nails, anyway, I guess.
Which is why it could be considered a "cheat". Maddy saw everything nailed shut and just outsmarted him.
Also, that's a different ghost than Maddy, so it might follow different rules.
And then Zane stepped on the pedal and activated the ghost trap and things were never horrifying again.
From under the bed… oh my god I will be having some delightful "dreams" tonight. Poor Wadsworth.
In 1840 a cooking fire started in Harker’s home, tragically killing his wife and infant son, and seriously injuring him. Allegedly, Harker overheard doctors saying that they would not be able to heal his burns, and when they returned to his bedside, Harker called for his sewing kit.
Very nice catch, did'nt make the link and just thought "well, that's a fucked up skelton for sure, seems a bit gratuitiously hidious"
A admire his ability of saving himself when doctors couldn't, but he can fuck off now.
Anywhere away from Wadswoth would be just peachy prefect.
If “saving himself” Entails failure to fall down when the dead skin he had sewn to what was left of his face kiled him from probable infection, the he sure was saved, alright.
That was ten years before the “Schimilwis Doctrine”, precursor to modern sanitation. Most likely, his burns were infected. Despicable narcissist was more concerned with how ugly he had become then over his family or the fact he was about to die.
Interesting stitching. Maddie doesn't wish to go 'naked' (fully skeletal)? If this is young Maddie…..
DO NOT WANT.
I am really glad I'm reading this at 7:26 am.
Well, out of the frying pan, into the maw of the terrifying eldritch horror.
The speech bubble isnt there but in the last panel I am imagining Wadsworth says real quietlike "oh hell."
I think what's interesting in this comic, is the fact that "Young Maddy" speaks. In the original "Curious Little Thing" comic, the man at the front desk of the hotel says, "…she never says a word. She just wants to look, is all. Just to see."
That's Harker, The Stitched Man, not Young Maddy, is why.
Oh, I don't think this here is Maddy, but the much more horrifying Skin-taker…
Well, I didn't feel like finishing my breakfast sandwich after all. Just gonna put it down and slide it faar away from me and not look at the last panel for a while.
Dammit Kris!! From under the bed!! How am I gonna sleep tonight?!
(I've never been more happy to sleep in a bunk bed than I am right now… or more terrified to climb down from it.)
The art's AMAZING, especially Maddy and the rhythm suggested by the different panel widths. Also, that last panel? Absolute brilliance.
"And when he woke, it was all a dream and his arm hurt from hammering all those nails."
I have a confession – I loved the way this comic was put together, and it terrified me, but then I started reading the last line as "WOW NICE" and I'm finding it way more amusing than it is
I think the skeleton is admiring his handiwork. Next panel: "So, you hammered all these in in just ONE comic?"
my sides. way to ruin this for me!!
That's the terror-shock, giving you the giggles to insulate your brain.
What exactly is Zane trying to do here? This all seems premeditated…
I'll take a guess here, and say that he's trying to sacrifice himself, for Iris's well being. He locked the room to prevent… whatever that is from leaving(according to the pattern, it can only move through unstable space, and the under-the-bed is a dead end,) and the blindfold is there to keep him from losing his mind…
Welp, that really didn't work as intended.
Peeka-boo, I see you.
IT CAN TALK!!!
IT CAN -SING-!!!
Sadly, it appears that the specter of financial ruin has finally caught up with Zane :(
So… about the doors: http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-1983
"We've closed all the ones we've found, but what if they get opened again?"
I thought I'd check on this, while I was recovering from the epic heart attack of killing a black widow in my pjs, and then damn near peed my pants upon finding this page. . . It is 1230 at night, and I will never sleep again O~O I sort of hate you and love you at the same time. But needless to say, I will never read this at night ever again in life.
I am TOTALLY loving your command of Ctulhu-style horror! Not to mean that this is somehow less of your own making, but the atmosphere is, I think, best described as Lovecraftian! Oh boy, oh boy, I'm peeing blood in here!
You menstruate when you’re happy?
Seems like Maddy may have been the lesser of two evils.
WHY AM I READING THIS IN A DARK BASEMENT AT 2 AM!
GODDAMMIT goosEbumps and now I really can't sleep.
Maddy? Is that a flashlight in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
That's something MUCH WORSE than poor little Maddy….
I think the ghost in the last panel is "Harker" not maddy…
Indeed a respectable proposition there. Thanks.
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!! I’M FREKIN’ OUT!!
Nope nope nope nope no no no no no no no nope no whERE IS MERCY
I’ve noticed the comments seem to be mixed up… A couple posts in and posters are referring to sewing kits?
