Whew, that last panel. Excelllllent.
Mr. Geiger, is that you?
At first I was happy to see the recurrence of the existentialist skeleton. Then I saw the last panel. Now I am no longer happy to see the existentialist skeleton
Recurrence from where, if you please?
The character is called Cadavre and the cat is Fracture, they're from the Chainsawsuit Labs: http://labs.chainsawsuit.com/2012/02/04/cadavre/
I'd like to see that last frame without the text, I would!
WHY!? Why would you want to see that any clearer!? D-:
See it was all in his head, but now it spilling out all over the place.
Love the old Disney style. It's like there's going to be a trio of dancing skeletons.
Until you got to that last frame. That's just creepy.
Yes. This is why I love Broodhollow. So good!
Mood whiplash at its finest.
This has, over the last few months, become one of the webcomics I look forward to the most. Well done.
Aw how adorab-AAHHH!
Nice to see you getting some use out the stuff in the labs. Love this comic!
The last panel made me nearly drop my phone.
I swear I can hear cheery, scratchy, old-cartoon music playing over each panel, until the last one, where the sound gets really distorted and you can hear screaming in the background.
I can't get over how stylish this comic is. It's damn visceral and hits past my thinking mind. I'm just like reacting all over the place.
I half expected the skelecat to start lapping up the puddle of blood.
I never really watched Ren & Stimpy, but I remember them doing a thing sort of like this – except this is awesome and not some gross toe nail fungus.
This reminded me of the classic Cab Calloway 'St James Infirmary' Betty Boop video. Wonderful juxtaposition of fun cartoon visuals, with a genuinely dark undercurrent. 'If anyone should ask you… tell them I got those St James Infirmary Blues…'
The mime sounds Cajun in my head. He's like a skeletal, mime, Gambit.
Nothing left but to beg for merci
Love the switch from the old Disney to the new Creepy style.
"don't die there" … this can be nothing but good…
Ooo. On re-reading, I like how the cigarette end in panel 6 is the same colour as the ghoul's eyes. There's kind of colour cues in the other bottom row panels that things gonna get zany. Nicely played sir!
Zany, eh? Well done yourself sir…
Nah, he just smokes blu's. The premiere electronic cigarette. Product placement at it's finest!
What the heck!!! All the good feelings are gone!! DESTROYED by the last panel… I'm supposed to sleep tonight!?
Great. Now I have to change my pants.
So bloody good. So bloody frickin' good.
I love this comic.
I am thoroughly enamored with this page. Every panel, every moment, but the last panel especially takes my breath away. Absolutely yes.
That last panel makes me really, really uncomfortable. It's like one of those creepypastas where some kid's cartoon suddenly gets REALISTIC AND TERRIFYING.
Like Candle Cove, perhaps?
YEAH EXCEPT CANDLE COVE WAS TERRIFYING THE WHOLE TIME
Giger meets Straub for the last panel. I am pleasently surprised by your new comic. Keep up the good work :)
Who's the bright young salesman who's watched by you and me?
Double-you, A-D-S, Worth Z-A-N-E!
Who's the pattern breaker who's as foolish as can be?
Double-you, A-D-S, Worth Z-A-N-E!
Wadsworth Zane, Wadsworth Zane
Switchwater isn't gonna dull the paiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin…
Bats and ghost girls pale in the face of what you'll see
Double-you, A-D-S, Worth Z-A-N-E!
My thoughts exactly. Maybe Wuvcraft will make an appearance too!
For years I've read wecomics in a shrunken window so I can read one panel at a time. I do that because I have a problem of skipping to the end and spoiling the joke. This method works perfectly for Broodhollow. Wow.
Best part of the last panel is how his striped shirt, now possibly covered in dark blood, has become a rib cage.
S*** just got real.
Please post desktop size of the last panel without text.
Please also contact Ghostbusters before you do.
I feel like instead of the intended juxtaposition of "Oh no silly thing turned creepy," I can't unsee the "Okay creepy thing turned silly."
Now I'm just going to see Broodhollow as a story about someone being haunted by the Cadavre :(
That last panel would make a LOVELY screensaver, beg you to make one in 1080p Quality!
You could add some "Broodhollow.com" in one of the corner's and i bet it will bring you a lot of new readers!
Heh, ask and ye shall receive, Cadavre is already in the wallpapers. Excellent Mr. Straub, simply magnificent.
Also totally not sleeping now.
Chris' next comic will be a tender, undead coming of age story:
How Grim Was My Fandango
Or: El Dia de los Sentimientos
Wow Kris, I just had to chime in here and show my appreciation. It's cool to see the philophical skeleton and his cat in this comic, but I also like the old time cartoony flourishes before the transition to the final panel. It's just great all around.
Anyone else notice that Wadsworth now looks like Mickey Mouse?
Until you said that, I hadn't noticed. Nice!!
Buttonpants! Le chic classique.
'Pauvre Monsieur Zane'. C'est un couchemar pour il!
Right, no longer reading this just before bed.
I just assume the cat is licking up his blood puddle meanwhile.
I've been waiting for the other foot to drop after the past few "happy" comics. I needed for it to happen.
Yea, it was pretty expected. Tragedy is always preceded by it's opposite.
Jesus, Kris. This strip triggered a bunch of repressed memories about some old black-and-white Disney cartoon I had on video as a kid. It was about this guy who stops at a hotel, except the staff are skeletons and are secretly trying to eat him. He figures it out and runs away in the end, only for the camera to pan back and reveal his horse has turned into a skeleton. It terrified me, so thanks for that
Something has been bugging me…
I think the doctor is in Zane's head as well as the ghost. or they are the same entity that's a part of the town. No one acknowledges either of them. they seem to appear and re-appear at random (see: Angstrom and Zane out in the daylight where they find the bat – the doctor just walks off?). Also, They are the same thematic color.
OR Zane is in an entirely different state of mind and Broodhollow is a place he used to live in so while he's going crazy in the real-world, the doctor is doing a shutter island type thing…
I'm willing to forfeit any of these ideas, it just that the doctor strikes me as a peculiar fellow who would be out for his own gain rather than to help some random new guy in town.
But he IS out for his own gain, he admitted it himself. Quote: "Mr Zane, it is I who will be thanking you in the notes of each of my research papers." That said, I did thought about all those scenarios too, but we already know them, and so does Mr. Straub. I'm keeping my fingers crossed to the chance that, IF the truths will ever be revealed, they'll be something new and unexpected.
Please, won't someone think of the poor pet bat?
I knew it. I saw this guy in the newspaper several strips ago, and he stood out. It had to have been intentional. :D
I just love the blood on his head! How its so consistent and even continues to pour out vertically after he gets up!
… That face in the last panel made me feel rather nostalgic, as I was once an avid fan of the Bionicle series. It had a great likeness to some of the Bionicles from the earlier generations, like Sidorak, Roodaka, and Axonn…
Three streaks of blood, just like later visions in Chapter 2!
And so my scream woke my dog.
Spooky scary skeletons send shivers down your spine
